New Canon 5DS & 5DSr Revealed.

Canon have recently announced the release of the Canon EOS 5DS and 5DSr, two bodies that will co-exist alongside their Canon EOS 5D MK III counterpart. These are dedicated high-resolution cameras boasting a full frame resolution of 50MP primarily intended for studio, landscape and wedding work. This naturally excites us due to level of composite work we do and these cameras appear to be an excellent alternative to top-end medium format digital cameras and backs. The only difference between the two cameras is that the 'S' has an optical low-pass filter, while the 'S R' has a self-cancelling filter.

Some of the key features for these models include;

  • 50MP CMOS sensor
  • 5fps continuous shooting
  • ISO 100-6400 (Extends to 12,800)
  • 61-point AF module with input from 150k pixel metering sensor
  • Dual Digic 6 processors
  • 3.0" 1.04m dot LCD
  • CF & SD slots (UHS-I compatible)
  • 1080/30p video
  • M-Raw and S-Raw down-sampled formats
  • 30MP APS-H crop and 19.6MP APS-C crop modes
  • USB 3.0 interface

Canon have added a few changes as you would expect with a new model release all with the intention of retaining as much clarity and responsiveness as possible. They have a new reinforced tripod socket to improve stability, a new motorized mirror mechanism system that allows more control to reduce mirror slap and finally  mirror vibration reduction to maximize sharpness.

The 5D MK III will of course still perform better in high ISO situations, so it's reasonable to suggest these cameras will be used by very different photographers. I hope to get a closer look at them at The Photography Show and it's fair to suggest as these models have been announced long before their June 2015 release date some of the features, might be subject to changes.
